Sun Hee Engelstoft's feature documentary NO REGRETS deals with the issues and societal as well as family pressures unmarried women in South Korea, where abortion is illegal, are confronted with. The film follows the stories of young single mothers at a shelter on the island of Jeju as they battle with a life changing decision: whether to keep their child or give it away for adoption. The film will be set to music by Karsten Fundal.

Karsten Fundal wrote the score for Lise Birk Pedersen's documentary TUTTI A CASA - POWER TO THE PEOPLE? (2016), a documentary following Beppe Grillo's protest movement and democratic experiment 'Movimento'.

The most recent feature films with a soundtrack by Karsten Fundal  - BRIDGEND (2015; directed by Jeppe Rønde) and VIRGIN MOUNTAIN (2015; directed by Dagur Kári) - received several awards at TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL, including the top prizes. In addition, Dagur Kári's VIRGIN MOUNTAIN was awarded the prestigious Nordic Council Film Prize 2015.

Music for MICHAEL MADSEN'S film THE VISIT (2015): Karsten Fundal has written the score to the latest documentary of director Michael Madsen – a concrete and scientific investigation of the scenario of an Alien visit. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2015, where Fundal was Composer in Spotlight.

In 2014/2015, Karsten Fundal composed the score for HALDEN, MICHAEL MADSEN's film essay for the 3D marathon film CATHEDRALS OF CULTURE, a co-production between Neue Road Movies and Final Cut for Real with contributions by among others Wim Wenders and Robert Redford. 

 

Stage / Orchestral

In February 2016, the premiere of the second of three collaborative symphonies by Karsten Fundal and DEN SORTE SKOLE with the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra received highest critical acclaim.

We are very happy to announce a new opera by Karsten Fundal and EFTERKLANG, directed by Christian Lollike:

LEAVES - The Colour of Falling (2015) is a genre-crossing operatic production taking place underground in a giant Cold War-era bunker beneath Copenhagen’s municipal hospital. Once used as a subterranean emergency hospital but long since abandoned, the audience is being led through the labyrinthine corridors that have been closed to the public for decades. Karsten Fundal's large orchestral piece LIQUID ROOMS with Odense Symphony Orchestra had its premiere in 2014. A concert installation with solo singer Katinka Fog-Vindelev, video artist Michala Clemmensen and light artist Mikael Sylvest. Lyrics by Mark R. Slaughter, conducted by Henrik Vagn Sørensen.

Mathias Reumert has set up a portrait concert of Karsten Fundal's music with Ekko Zone, taking place at Frederiksborg Castle Chapel and at Soro Abbey Church. The music has been recorded for an album release.

LEAVES - THE COLOUR OF FALLING has received a nomination for the prestigious REUMERT AWARD in the category Opera of the Year.

Together with Efterklang, Karsten Fundal has been awarded the CARL PRISEN 2016, the Prize of the Danish Music Publishers' Association for their collaborative opera project LEAVES - THE COLOUR OF FALLING.
Furthermore, his score for Jeppe Rønde's film BRIDGEND was nominated for the prize.
